It could also be your memory. “There’s a term in the scientific literature called ‘rosy retrospection’,” says the neuroscientist, speaking from a damp, cold and largely bleak University of Cambridge.

In his mind, he says, the summers of his childhood were much warmer and sunnier than this one.
